Hike a gorgeous, off-the-beaten-path trail with 2 remote waterfalls!
With a seasoned local and storyteller as your guide, this tour will take you on a lush, woodland trail, featuring a riverside hike that few locals know about. Expect two cascading waterfalls, rock gardens, and stories on early mountain history—all in 2.5 hours! This tour is sure to enthrall anybody looking for a scenic Appalachian hike.
You will meet your guide in Old Fort, NC, a sweet mountain town just 25 to 30 minutes east of Asheville, NC, and proceed for a 7-mile (approx. 15-minute) drive to the trailhead.
Once you arrive at the trailhead, soak in the scenery of Pisgah National Forest and prepare for some incredible storytelling! To begin, your guide will share intriguing facts about Southern Appalachian ecology and the unique history of the forest you are hiking into. Using a 3-D topographic map, your guide will pinpoint your location, orient you to nearby landmarks, and provide an overview of Southern Appalachian topography.
Feel the cool mountain air on your skin and breathe the sweet aroma of plants surrounding you as you enter the verdant, shaded forest. The trail continues through an enchanted cove forest alongside a tumbling mountain stream. Observe the way the sun glistens on the rushing water as it pokes through the canopy of trees overhead. Your guide will discuss the historical and modern uses of many of the plants that catch your eye. After hiking for approximately 1.25 miles, you will reach a breathtaking 150-ft waterfall, draping over moss-covered cliffs. Your guide will reveal the secrets of the plants that call these cliffs “home.”
You will return to the trailhead along the same outgoing trail (about 2.5 miles round-trip). Note, although the same trail, a change in direction can reveal new features in the forest. To conclude the tour, we will recommend our favorite restaurant and brewery in Old Fort! We share with you our other favorite things to do and places to eat around Asheville, as well!
Feel free to reach out to us with any questions you have about the waterfall tour, but please note that YOU WILL RECEIVE A TEXT the day before the tour to confirm meeting times and locations and answer any additional questions you may have.
Rain/ice/snow policy: Our early morning departure helps us avoid the afternoon precipitation. Nonetheless, many guests have an excellent time in the light rain, under the forest canopy (and rain makes waterfalls even better!) In case of heavy rain or inclement weather, full refunds are provided.
